Hunter's Checklist
For a positive
outdoor experience, tailor a checklist to your own
needs. Based on each year’s time out in the field,
modify your list to include all necessary items, while keeping
it as small and efficient as possible. Click on the button below to print up
a good, basic check list from which to start. While it
is suited more for big game hunting day trips, with a few
modifications, a water fowling or upland bird list can be
created. Oh, and don’t forget your firearm and
ammunition! Check out our great selection of hunting clothing & hunting boots. |

Get
Ready for Winter!
It’s time to take out your winter
equipment such as skis, poles, snowshoes, snowboards, etc. and
look it over. Not a quick once-over,
“everything-looks-good” glance -- but a close examination
needs to be done. The equipment that will be carrying
you on this winter’s snow should be in top condition. In
the case of skis and snowboards, bindings should be tested and
bases tuned, structured, and waxed. Your equipment needs
to be worthy of the rigors to which you will subject it during
your winter activities.
Likewise, evaluate
your clothing for its fit and insulation value. Has the
warmth you enjoyed when your favorite ski jacket was new been
lost due to numerous outings and cleanings? Will your
outerwear still fit so that flexing the arms, legs and torso
is easy and fluid? Probably most importantly, do your
boots fit well and are they truly comfortable enough to
provide long days of pleasure in the
outdoors?
Snow, natural or
manufactured, will be flying soon! Some already has out
west! Take a few moments now to check over your gear and
make the difference between a positive first outing and a
disappointing one. View our new site in progress for 2007/2008 alpine, snowboard, and nordic gear!

Fall Footwear - Better than
Ever for the Fall Hunting Season. Footwear choices for fall and
winter activities have never been better—light, sturdy,
insulated, waterproof, breathable, high, low, brightly colored
or camouflaged….you name it, we've got it. To make the
correct footwear choice, follow the selection process that
Joe’s experts use to determine manufacturer, material, style
and weight:
1. What is your
primary use? Are you sitting motionless in a
deer stand or walking briskly through pheasant cover with
wide-ranging German Shorthairs? In one instance, you may
choose LaCrosse’s Alpha Burly®
or Muck Boot Company’s Wetland Field Boot®; in the other, you may choose one of
the many mid-height, breathable upland boots available at
Joe’s. For rough, rocky terrain, consider thick
lug-soled boots with significant ankle support such as
Danner’s Frontier Series®
and Irish Setter’s Big Game Tracker®.
2. Balance seasonal temperature, level of
activity and how you are personally affected by hot or
cold. Generally speaking, if you do not feel cold easily, or if your activity
level is high, consider non-insulated footwear or footwear in
the 200-400 gram range. You can elevate warmth to some
degree in this footwear range by adding an insulating sock
such as SmartWool® or InGenious®. Conversely, if you
feel cold easily or your activity level is low, select
insulation above 400 grams. LaCrosse’s Alpha Burley® in 600-1000 grams and the ever
popular Sorel® line of pac boots can’t be beat for super cold
weather.
Joe’s can help you to
find the perfect footwear for your outdoor pursuits. Come

fall footwear lineup at http://www.joessportinggoods.com/.

October is a great month for
Fishing!
It makes no difference which species
you prefer to fish, October is a great month to get out on the
water, perhaps the best month of the entire year! With
the fall lake turn-over, water temperatures start to cool and
become more uniform, which tends to make fish feed more
actively. The fall turn-over occurs earlier in smaller,
shallower lakes and later in larger, deeper bodies of
water. With this variance in turn-over, you need to
evaluate your fishing haunts and remember that timing is
everything! Experiment, go shallower and present lures a
size or so larger than you would have a month ago…the finny
critters want a good-sized meal. |
