country, fisher men and women are getting prepared for the
beginning of a new season. Whether the pursuit is for pan fish,
walleyes, bass, catfish, or musky, there is an excitement in the

It is time to
spread tackle on the floor, examine and lubricate (or replace)
each reel, change old line for new, and take inventory of hooks,
leaders, lures, and tools, making a list of needed upgrades. And,
while you’re shopping for fishing supplies, be sure not to
overlook our featured hot new product by Berkley®. The Berkley
people have performed extensive and successful tests with these
new bio-degradable live bait look-smell-&-feel-alike imitations,

TAKE THE SUN SERIOUSLY WHILE HAVING FUN! |

Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the US, with more
than a million new cases expected to be diagnosed this year.* The
clothing industry has responded to these growing statistics by
developing garments with UPF (Ultra
violet Protection) ratings.
All garments have an inherent amount of protection that is
affected by color and tightness of weave. Lighter colors and
looser weaves allow more light to pass through. For example, that
white t-shirt you wear to the beach would rate about a "6", until
it gets wet. Then it drops to a "3".
UPF is a measurement of how much of the sun’s burning ultraviolet rays
get through a fabric. The ratings vary from 15-50+ and can
be found on stickers or the hang tags on a garment. What it
means: A fabric with a rating of 50 lets in 1/50 of UVA & UVB
radiation, or only 2%.
The beauty of UPF is that it can be added to extremely lightweight and light colored
garments, which are more comfortable in warmer weather. To get a UPF rating, the fabric must be
treated with a special dye additive that absorbs UVA & UVB
radiation, and it must be tested. The dye attaches more
easily to synthetics, often times giving them the highest UPF ratings. Synthetics
also possess the still-important attributes of being wrinkle
resistant and quick drying.
Nearly every clothing line we carry is making products with UPF. Of course, the more skin coverage a garment has, the more protective it is. You will find UPF protection in anything from base layers to outer layers and everything in between. It’s that big of a deal. Come see what we offer in brands like Columbia, the North Face, Mountain Hardwear, Patagonia, Exofficio, Lole, Woolrich, and White Sierra.

BIRDING, BOATING, HIKING OR HUNTING, QUALITY OPTICS A MUST! |

May is a wonderful
month to be Out There, and
whether that is bird-watching in the floodplains and marshy
nesting areas, hiking through the newly-leaved hardwoods, or
boating on the nation’s lakes, rivers and seashores, a good pair
of durable, packable binoculars with quality optics is hard to
beat. It is important to remember that in choosing optics,
magnification and field-of-view are inversely proportional; that
is, as you increase the magnification, the area you can see
through the lenses decreases. Also, once magnification is
increased beyond 10 power, hand-held movements are more
noticeable. Most importantly, choosing quality optics is a smart
investment. While bargain binoculars will magnify, looking
through them for any period of time will cause eye strain and even
headaches—this is where shopping for quality just makes good
sense. Check out the premium optics at Joe’s such as Leica, Nikon,
Steiner, Swarovski and Vortex. |

FRENCH ONION SOUP
This recipe for French Onion
Soup is more of an accompaniment to any wild game meal. While it
calls for finishing off in an oven, this dish can be prepared in a
Dutch oven over coals. As an extra with walleye shore lunch on a cold
spring opener, it is unbeatable. |
