Yes,
many of us have been waiting all winter to step into a boat again to
hunt Muskies. We’ve been buying new lures now and then, sorting
through the tackle box, checking each veteran bait for wear and
sharpening hooks when required.
When the “Opener” finally
arrives, water temperature may very well hold around 60 degrees,
causing the post-spawn fish to hold tight in thick weeds, to be
lethargic, and to act just plain tired out. Right then, the muskies
are looking for a good meal that is moving slowly. So using a
twitch bait, slow-rolled or "helicpotered" marabou spinner to poke
around the open pockets in thick weeds can be the
ticket.
Here are a few thoughts on fishing these early days
of the season:
| |
• Watch the water
temperature closely...over 60-degrees the Muskies start to
move a little bit deeper. A weedy edge just outside the
spawning bay is a most likely spot to find them. Five more
degrees warmer and many muskies will begin to move out to main
bodies of water and be less concentrated.
• Move
slowly...both in covering good structure and in the
retrieve…work slower, pause longer, twitch more
deliberately.
• Be ready…a big female charging out of
the weeds for a meal won’t be kidding around once
committed.
• Mix it up size-wise...While smaller baits
are the seemingly obvious and by-the-book choice during the
season’s early weeks, a bigger jerk bait or twitch bait,
worked slowly, can appear an easy meal and hard to pass up.
• Remember the basics...1) Understand the fish you’re
chasing, 2) Determine the optimum structure to fish for the
season/temperature, 3) Hone your presentation skills,
including casting skills, lure familiarity and boat
control. |

Joe’s now has a twitter account: www.twitter.com/joessports.
Although we try to keep you as informed as we can about our
store specials and events, the fact is that newsletters like
this one come to you only once a month, and special email
announcements come 5-to-7 days in advance of an event. If you
follow us on twitter, we’ll drop short updates on a regular
basis.
Here’s an example: during the month of May, we
conducted Kayak demos on Lake Gervais so prospective buyers
could try different models to see which would be the best fit
for them. We advertised these demonstrations in advance, but
on the day of the event, we tweeted that the demonstrations
were going on at that moment, so if you had been in the area
with some time on your hands, you might have thought, “That
sounds like fun! I think I’ll drive over and spend an hour
paddling!” It’s that immediate.
We will be tweeting
sales, special events, seminars, new products, etc......so,
follow us on twitter and get more connected to
Joe’s! |

Thanks
to all the prospective and veteran paddlers who came out to
enjoy the fine weather this May at our Lake Gervais “Try
Before You Buy” kayak and canoe demos this year. Also, a
special thank you goes out to the Joe’s employees who worked
hard to make this a seamless and fun-filled event, and to
company representatives from Wilderness Systems, Dagger,
Necky, Old Town, Perception, and Bell, who were on hand to
answer product questions and demonstrate canoeing and kayaking
techniques to our customers….nice job,
folks! |
 |
Watersports!!!
Lakes and
rivers are warming up all over the country, and it’s time to
“get out there” with the newest in wake boards, water skis and
towables. Joe’s is stocked for the season with
