Goes to the Snow Show!

As this edition of "Out There With Joe's!" goes to press, part of Joe's Ski Shop staff will be in Denver for the 2010 Snow Show - four days of our investment to continue to grow our passion for snow sports. The Snow Show is the industry's largest trade show, with nearly 1,000 brands set to debut their complete product lines. We'll be there for the unveiling of the 2010/2011 product lines to see cutting-edge technology in all snow sports and we'll meet with top management representing all of the brands - the major names and those that are new on the scene.  We will have the opportunity to attend over 300 different educational seminars and events about emerging products and industry trends.

As an official Snow Show attendee, SnowSports Industries America (the industry's trade association) recognizes us as a "Snow Expert." That means we'll come back from the Snow Show brimming with knowledge and all of the latest gear, ready to help make your season on the slopes the best one yet.

Not only is the staff attending the trade show, but some will also be able to demo the ski hard-goods before they buy them.  This way, we only bring back the stuff that we know will make your trip to the mountains even better. Even more importantly, we will be able to determine first hand what products DO NOT work well and eliminate them from those we carry and recommend to you.

Each year we come back smarter, with better product knowledge which allows us to better serve you and to be  your local "Snow Expert".

Layering for a Day on the Slopes

We've all been there... We head for the hill when it's sunny and cold, and then later it turns windy and wet, or vice versa. You can be comfortable in any weather and at any activity level if you layer properly.

Start by selecting your base layer, or the layer next to your skin. Avoid cotton because it absorbs moisture and keeps you damp and eventually makes you cold out there. Use a synthetic or wool long underwear top, bottom, and socks against your skin. The fibers in these garments from Under Armour, Hot Chilly's and Smartwool wick the moisture away from your body and move it out to the next layer. Choose the weight of the long underwear by your activity, outside temperature, and how you tolerate the cold. You can use lightweight garments for more aerobic activities, use mid-weight for more stop and go activities, and use heavy-weight if you will be more stationary.

The next layer that you need is a mid-layer for insulation. There are many mid-layer options for skiing and snowboarding. Some enthusiasts use a vest or wool sweater, however, the most popular choice tends to be a polyester fleece.  Fleece is light weight, easy to care for, and generally less expensive than other options. You can find pull over and cardigan styles in a variety of weights from The North Face, Spyder, Mountain Hardwear, Marmot, and Columbia. You may also want a classic wool sweater from Dale of Norway, Meister, Kuhl, or Neve.

Your outer layer is there to protect you from the elements. The two most important features of this layer are to be wind proof and water proof. You may choose a simple shell garment or an insulated one for the coldest conditions.  Classic ski styles by Spyder, Descente, and Obermeyer tend to offer the most insulation.  By selecting a component (3-in-1) jacket you get your protective shell with a removable insulator which makes this jacket good all the way through spring. The North Face and Columbia are the two most popular brands offering components.

Soft-shells are rapidly growing in popularity. The trim cut and stretch design make them a first choice for around town casual wear as well as for sport. You can find these types of garments from mountaineering brands like Marmot, Mountain Hardwear, The North Face, and Salomon. Snowboarders often opt for bonded fleece hoodies. They wear just like a regular sweatshirt but offer more in the way of wind and water resistance while being quick dry. Because of the popularity of oversized hoodies in snowboarding, the jackets tend to be more shell style. Find both jackets and hoodies from DC, Burton, Ripzone, Bonfire, and Salomon.

Last but not least keep your head warm and brain protected with a ski or snowboard helmet. Each helmet is going to fit differently so let us help you get the right fit as well the look you want next time you're in the shop.
